About This Project
Project Location: Gallo de Oro, 2901 W Columbus Dr, Tampa, FL
Client: Anthony D. Llanes Jr. & Hilda V. Llanes, Trustees
This property, formerly a retail store, contained two 4,000-gallon and one 2,000-gallon leaded gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs), removed in 1992. A Discharge Reporting Form (DRF) was filed the same year after groundwater samples collected during removal showed contamination. The closure inspection noted the USTs had heavy corrosion, pitting, and perforations. Due to the site's low priority score, no further work occurred until NOVA, formerly MAS Environmental, initiated a Low-Scored Site Initiative (LSSI) assessment in February 2016.
Between 2017 and 2019, NOVA conducted assessments that confirmed groundwater contaminants exceeded Groundwater Cleanup Target Levels (GCTLs) and Natural Attenuation Default Concentrations (NADCs). Additional sampling in 2020 further documented impacts, with soil contamination primarily within the groundwater plume area.
What NOVA Did
Environmental Consulting
In July 2020, NOVA conducted an 8-hour soil vapor extraction (SVE) and air sparging (AS) pilot test. A Remedial Action Plan (RAP), recommending an AS/SVE system, was submitted in March 2021 and approved by FDEP in January 2022.
AS/SVE wells were installed in April 2024 using Hollow Stem Auger (HSA) drilling, followed by remedial construction in June 2024. Baseline groundwater sampling was performed in September 2024, and system startup occurred in October 2024.
About The System
- Six air sparge wells
- Six vertical SVE wells
- One Reitschle DLR-100 rotary claw compressor
- One URAI-47 blower
- One transfer pump
- One moisture separator
- One Sensaphone wireless telemetry unit
- 800-pound carbon filtration system for air polishing
- 90-pound carbon filtration system for water polishing
NOVA, completed the first round of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) in February 2025. Activities included recording system readings, making adjustments, inspecting and cleaning the blower, and addressing maintenance or safety concerns. Groundwater sampling in January 2025 showed no petroleum constituents above GCTLs, except in one monitoring well. NOVA, formerly MAS Environmental, recommended continuation of O&M under the current purchase order.
